In hopes of creating and supporting a healthier community, APSA student volunteers team-up to deliver free presentations on various health topics, such as hand washing, sun safety, smoking cessation, and the role of the pharmacist in the health care system with Edmonton students of various ages. For a full list and description of available presentations, please see the list below. The majority of presentations are between 40-60 minutes, but can be adjusted to fit class schedules.

ELEMENTARY

Operation Allergies: this presentation discusses what an allergy is, the causes, and symptoms via a comic and activity book and a short video. Students learn what they can do to help allergic friends by avoiding foods to which they will react and the steps that should be taken if you are having an allergic reaction such as how to use an Epipen auto-injector. “Allergy buddy” bracelets and certificates will be provided.

Target audience: grades K – 6
Materials required: computer, projector/screen, DVD player

Operation Wash Up: this interactive presentation incorporates bacteria plushies, a short video featuring the Lab Brats and a hand washing activity to help students understand the basic principles of proper hygiene and disease prevention. Stickers and activity books help to teach the message of hygiene.

Target audience: grades K – 4
Materials required: computer, projector/screen, DVD player, sink in the classroom or nearby

Smoking: an interactive activity booklet and presentation from Alberta Quits and AHS examining the effects of smoking on the body, second and third hand smoke, traditional Indigenous use of tobacco and the environmental effects of smoking.

Target audience: grades K-3
Materials required: computer, projector/screen

Role of the Pharmacist: a short powerpoint examines what a pharmacist does in the community and various workplaces, emphasizing healthy medication taking and pharmacy as a good profession to young ones.

Target audience: grades 2-4
Materials required: computer, projector/screen

Do Bugs Need Drugs: this interactive presentation teaches students about germs and emphasizes the importance of hand washing. Through the use of a song, a skit, coloring activities and a puppet named Bugsy students will learn to improve their hygiene and be introduced to the appropriate use of antibiotics. Stickers and handwashing posters will be provided.

Target audience: grades K-3
Materials required: printed coloring sheets, computer, projector/screen

Head Lice: teaches students what lice are, how they are spread, how to avoid transmission and what to do if a student becomes infected. This presentation consists of a powerpoint and interactive coloring and activity sheets.

Sun Safety/Skin Cancer Awareness: The Skin Cancer Awareness program focuses on promoting safe sun attitudes and behaviors in Edmonton’s youth. The powerpoint from the Canadian Skin Cancer Foundation will present basic scientific information about ultraviolet light and skin cancers. Prevention methods and the ABCDE’s of detection will also be highlighted. Sunscreen samples and sun-changing bracelets will be provided.

JUNIOR & HIGH SCHOOL

Operation Butt Out: a presentation to teach students about second-hand smoke, and the devastating effects of smoking. The presentation includes a fun video, a poster for your school and anti-smoking buttons and wristbands.

Target audience: Grades 4-9
Materials required: computer, projector/screen, DVD player

Pharmacy as a Profession: examines the role of the pharmacist and explores the various settings where a pharmacist may choose to work (eg. drug store, hospital, pharmaceutical company, research facility, etc). Information regarding admission requirements for the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Alberta is also provided. This presentation is a good choice for Career Days or a similar theme.

Target audience: grades 9-12
Materials required: computer, projector/screen

Smoking and Smoking Cessation: examines the dangers and risks associated with smoking, providing students with compelling reasons not to start. This presentation also discusses benefits of quitting smoking and briefly mentions available therapies to help with smoking cessation.

Target audience: grades 10-12
